Recreation vs Commercial

  • Recreational
    • Requirements
      • Pass the TRUST test through FAA, this is online
      • If drone weighs more than .55 lbs, register with FAA as recreational
    •  Definition
      • Flying for simply please and fun
      • Cannot be flying to make money or the furtherance of a business
  • Commercial
    • Requirements
      • Pass your 14 CFR Part 107 test (commonly referred to as your “part 107”)
      • All drones registered with FAA as Commercial, obtaining a N number
      • Visibly display N number on drone
    • Definition
      • Flying to make money
      • Furthering of a business

Classes of Drones

  • There are three different classes of drones that are based off of weight
    • .55 lbs and less
    • More than .55 lbs to 55 lbs
    • Over 55 lbs
  • These drones all have different restrictions of where you can fly and how they can be utilized.
    • Visit the FAA website to see what rules and regulations apply directly to your manufacturer specific drone.
